Nearly all of the Zionist colonies belonged to a centrally directed Zionist military network. They were impregnable to the light arms possessed by the Palestinians, and posed a formidable threat to Palestinian communications. The Zionist leadership used the colonies both to disrupt Palestinian communications and to stake out territorial claims for a state extending beyond the frontiers of the Jewish state envisioned in the UN partition recommendation (see 389). The Palestinians countered by trying to block the passage of reinforcements to the colonies.
