The funeral of King Hussein of Hijaz, Jerusalem, 4 June 1931. Leader of the Arab Revolt during World War I (see 8, 9, 10, 11), he was the father of King Faisal of Iraq (see 88, 106) and the great-grandfather of King Hussein of Jordan. It was to King Hussein of Hijaz that Britain had promised Arab independence, including that of Palestine, before issuing the Balfour Declaration. Both men were buried in the precincts of the Haram aI-Sharif (Noble Sanctuary), the compound that encloses the mosques of the Dome of the Rock (partly visible in 99) and al-Aqsa (see 1).
