After graduating from Cambridge University, George Antonius (1891-1942) began his civil service career in Palestine first in the Education Department and then in the Secretariat (the British Mandatory Executive). He resigned from the latter in 1930 to become Middle Eastern associate of the Institute of Current World Affairs in New York. His classic book, The Arab Awakening, was published by Hamish Hamilton of London in 1938. Antonius was secretary general to the Arab delegations at the London Conference, 1939 (see 291).
