As a punitive measure against the Palestinians, the British military blew up large sectors of the Old City of Jaffa, ostensibly for "town-planning purposes." To his credit the chief justice of Palestine, Michael F. J. McDonnell, chastised the government for throwing "dust in people's eyes by professing to be inspired with aesthetic or quasi-philanthropic motives ...." His Honor was subsequently relieved of his post. (See 283).
