By the end of 1939, the Palestinians had been militarily overcome. Conservative estimates of Palestinian casualties for the period 1936-39 are about 5,000 killed and 14,700 wounded out of a total Palestinian population of ca. one million. This would be roughly equivalent to 1,130,000 Americans killed and 3,322,200 wounded, on the basis of the current United States population of ca. 226 million. (For Palestinians detained, see 282).
