Shaikh As'ad al-Shukairi, elected to the Ottoman Parliament from Acre in 1908 and 1912. He was trained in Islamic religious law, having graduated from Azhar University, Cairo. Shukairi occupied many positions in the Ottoman religious judiciary in Palestine and elsewhere, including that of president of the Court of Appeal for the Adana Province (Asia Minor). For a time he was librarian of the Imperial Library, Yildiz Palace, Istanbul, and during World War I served as mufti (interpreter of religious law) of the Fourth Ottoman Army in Syria-Palestine. He was the father of Ahmad Shukairi, who became chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in 1964 (see 105, 224).
