The SNS (Special Night Squads) composed of British and Jewish personnel, were organized by the British in 1938-39 to assault Palestinian villages on hit-and-run raids. Here an SNS patrol is led by Orde Wingate, the eccentrically ruthless British officer who created the SNS and first tried out his tactics on the Palestinians before using them in World War II against the Italians (in Ethiopia) and the Japanese (in Burma). In the words of Moshe Dayan, himself trained by Wingate in the SNS: "Every leader of the Israeli Army even today is a disciple of Wingate .... "
