Lord Walter Moyne (1880-1944), close friend of Winston Churchill, British colonial secretary in 1941-42, and subsequently minister resident in the Middle East. On 6 November 1944 he was assassinated in Cairo by two members of the terrorist organization Lohemai Herut Israel (Fighters for the Freedom of Israel), otherwise known as the Stern Gang after its founder Avraham Stern. Yitzhak Shamir, former speaker of the Knesset and current prime minister of Israel, was one of the three leaders of the Stern Gang who ordered the assassination.
